Nutrition for Skin Health
Your skin is so much more than your outward appearance. It is the largest organ in the body and works hard to protect us. This great defender of our bodies relies upon us giving it the nutrients that it needs.
Your skin secretes antimicrobial sebum to guard against bacterial invasion, helps protect you from environmental pollutants, its pigment melanin provides a defence against damaging UV light, it is sensory, giving us touch and regulating our temperature, and it makes vitamin D.

Skin conditions that can benefit from nutritional support
People come to me when their skin is displaying signs that all is not well within. These include:
- Dry skin, eczema and dermatitis
- Psoriasis
- Rosacea
- Signs of premature ageing
- Spots and acne
- Skin sensitivity
A holistic approach to skin health
To support skin health, help relieve skin conditions, or just maintain great skin, hair and nails as we age, we need to consider our general health, stress levels, external and internal environment, and how we take care of our skin through our diets, exercise and lifestyle.

How nutrition can help the skin
Nutrition therapy helps to identify what is needed and help you practically implement the supportive actions.
Support the skin microbiome
The skin has a microbiome made up of around a thousand species of bacteria and other microbes. The beneficial bacteria help to out-compete the harmful ones supporting skin health and reducing infection and inflamed acne risk. Dietary and lifestyle strategies support this microbiome.
Nutrient & antioxidant protection
Optimal skin function is dependent on nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamins A,B,C,D & E and minerals zinc and selenium. These help to disarm free-radicals which attack our skin health and lead to signs of premature ageing. Working together on meal planning can help you more easily reach optimal levels.
Fat balance
The skin's surface and inner cells are reliant on the fats we take in through our diets, the cells have a fatty, fluid mosaic membrane which allows in nutrients and supports the exit of waste products and toxins. Meal planning and supplement recommendations help you achieve the delicate fat balance which is needed for skin cell integrity, especially from omega-3 fats, supporting smooth and supple skin.
Skin hydration
Skin hydration isn't just about drinking enough water to give skin support and elasticity, but also about the cell membranes which help maintain the cellular water balance and so plump and resilient skin cells.

Protein power for hair, skin & nails
The skin, nails and hair need keratin, collagen and elastin proteins for structure and maintenance. I can help you understand and include the amino acid building blocks and carotenoids for strong and supple, skin, hair & nails.
An integrated medicine approach to skin health
Skin issues can be associated with other health challenges such as suboptimal thyroid function, elevated stress hormones, and menopause.
As a nutritional therapist, I look at you as a whole, and assess how to support the underlying challenges.
