Weight loss & diet support

Losing weight can be incredibly hard. If you've tried every diet and weight loss fad, spent years yo yo dieting and you're fed up with the constant weight battle.

You're not alone.

Losing weight, and keeping it off, can feel impossible.

But it's not because you're not trying hard enough, it is because biological, behavioural, and environmental factors conspire to resist weight loss and promote regain.

You need a different approach to Weight loss & dieting

Traditional diets don't work. Calorie-restricted diets have been shown to lead to weight loss, plateau, and then re-gain. An analysis of 29 different studies demonstrated that more than half of people on diets regained the lost weight in two years and over 80% by five years.

My approach to weight loss is evidence-based and proven from years of in-clinic experience.

What science tells us about long term weight loss

The calories-in, calories-out principle of most diets is flawed. Our bodies are designed to keep gained weight on, and sophisticated, bespoke strategies are needed for long-term success.

Armed with the right support, tools and nutrition, you can override the body's panic, which leads to weight regain,

You'll receive tailored support to ensure the strategies you adopt work for you long-term.

The weight loss challenge

  • Our environment

In these modern times, we move less and have fewer opportunities to move naturally, and our environment is increasingly leading us to processed foods which lead to fast weight gain.

  • Our selves

We blame ourselves for diet plans which simply don’t work long-term, we lose motivation, trigger inner rebellion and self-sabotage our goals

The imposed rules of dieting mentality erodes trust in our bodies as the rules micromanage us

  • Our bodies

Dieting can bring about the opposite results that we're working towards. Our bodies' survival response:

  • slows the metabolic rate, the rate at which we burn calories
  • The hormones that help us feel satisfied after eating adapt to weight loss by making us hungrier; we don’t realise we are eating more because this happens in a part of the brain which is not under conscious control
  • Muscle can be turned into carbohydrates and burned for fuel
  • The body tries to survive the dieting process by ‘fat-overshooting’ where the loss of fat and muscle triggers the body to produce more body fat to survive.

With each diet, weight loss becomes harder.

Your body learns how to adapt and survive.

Weight loss techniques that work!

Studies have shown that people who receive dietary and psychological support achieve by far the best long-term maintenance of not only their target weight but also their motivation, health, and happiness.

 My weight loss programmes:

  • Use researched and practised strategies to work with your body, not against it
  • Make the science of weight loss digestible and practical so you understand what your body is trying to do
  • Support mindful eating and enjoyment of flavour and food
  • Help override the body panic, which leads to weight re-gain, supporting cognitive consumption
  • Work out meal plans with you to fit into your life
  • Help you understand how to intuitively identify when you have a ‘body hunger’ and need food, or when it is a ‘heart hunger’ and how to satisfy this

Frequently asked questions

How long will it take for me to lose weight?

The length of time it takes you to get to your target weight will vary from person to person and will also depend on how much weight you have to lose.

It is easy to lose weight at the start of a diet, but we work on creating lasting results that avoid the dreaded yo-yo effect of weight loss and regain.

Everybody is different in how much they can change habits and at what speed; I'll work with you on this, and together we'll devise strategies to make sure that the positive changes are sustainable and enjoyable.

We work to maximise results without jeopardising the future.

How long this takes really does vary, but the positive effects of an improved diet and increased movement can be felt very quickly.

How many appointments will I need?

The number of appointments you'll need with a nutritional therapist will vary depending on:

  • your health and nutrition goals
  • the level of individual support your require and
  • whether you are managing any chronic conditions.

Our support packages are individually tailored to help support you over the long term.

You'll probably need more support at the start to embed new habits and strategies, so expect to have:

  • two to three one-hour consultations, then
  • 30-minute consultations every two to four weeks
  • moving to 15-minute weekly catch-ups

We are happy to discuss your requirements and support during your consultation.

Do I need to check with my GP first?

If you have any existing health conditions or take any medications requiring weight loss to be medically checked, please check in with your GP first.

This can be discussed with Yvonne in a quick chat before your first consultation if you are not sure.

Do I need tests?

It is really helpful if you could provide Yvonne with recent test results, especially a full blood count and thyroid screen.

If you don’t have these, this is no problem at all, Yvonne can arrange for private tests if needed at any point.

Will I have to exercise?

Yes. We all need to move; we work on ways of incorporating movement you enjoy.

You don't have to join a gym (unless you want to) movement can take all kinds of forms

  • walking /hiking
  • dancing
  • swimming
  • paddle boarding
  • cycling
  • gardening
  • yoga
  • pilates
  • tai chi
  • climbing
  • skating
  • weight lifting
  • football
  • netball
  • tennis/ badminton/ padel
  • group exercise classes
Will I be able to fit the plans into family and social life?

I help my clients to make positive and sustainable changes that fit their lifestyles.

I don't expect you to live like a monk, so your plan would allow for social occasions.

I don't advocate for extreme measures and deprivation, although you won't be following a traditional calories-in/calories-out model, you still need a calorie deficit to lose weight, so you will likely need to change some of your habits.

I'll help you work out how to adapt your meals so you can still enjoy eating with your family and socialising.

Are there any side effects?

When we think about weight loss, we tend to think of traditional diets that require severe deprivation and extreme willpower, but that's not how this works.

Sustainable weight loss supported by a nutritional therapist will involve improving your diet and increasing your movement.

Here are just some of the side effects my clients have experienced alongside sustainable weight loss:

  • increased energy & vitality
  • improved health outcomes
  • enjoyment of new foods
  • brighter skin
  • a renewed passion for life
  • more confidence
  • a love of walking /swimming /dancing /cycling /yoga etc
Do you use supplements?

My focus primarily is to provide your body with the nutrients it needs through good quality, whole food.

If I feel that supplements may support your health, then I would recommend them, but they are never essential to the plan.

Can I work with Yvonne alongside a previous weight loss programme as I still use some of the recipes?

If the recipes meet your health needs, then yes.

I often help clients adapt their favourite recipes, so they fit in with the programmes.

Do the plans use real food or meal replacement shakes?

The plans are based on real food.

There may be times when a shake can be used, but only ones which are based on sound nutrition.

Does Yvonne provide new meal plans when I get bored?

Like I've said, this is not like the diets you've done before.

My goal is to empower you to adopt long-term, positive changes to help you maintain a healthy weight.

Giving exact plans to follow doesn’t support people in growing their understanding and confidence in what is needed for themselves.

I'll start you off with a plan, after that, we'll design the meal plans together.

What about holidays and work travel?

It can be easy for our healthy habits to fall by the wayside when we're away from our usual environment, so I'll help you to work out how to choose healthier options when you are away.

It's important to keep in mind that any long-term plan should allow for indulgences too, I don't expect you to live like a monk!
