A lifetime of plant-based knowledge

Over the past 30 years, I’ve helped hundreds of clients and major food retailers and restaurant chains create nutritionally sound vegan and vegetarian meals and menus.

I’ve also co-authored several Vegan cookbooks with my husband, award-winning vegan chef Tony Bishop Weston.

So whether it’s a lifestyle choice or for health reasons, I can help you adopt a nutritionally-complete and balanced plant-based diet.

  Optimizing plant-based health

It might surprise you but simply removing meat or dairy from your diet doesn’t automatically make it healthy.

The NHS states, “with good planning and an understanding of what makes up a healthy, balanced vegan diet, you can get all the nutrients your body needs”. If you do not plan your diet properly, you could miss essential nutrients, such as calcium, iron, vitamin B12, iodine and selenium.

I have worked in the provision of plant-based diets for over 30 years and can support you in whatever steps in this direction you would like to explore, ensuring your diet is providing the best nutrition for you. And of course, inspiring and delicious.

I offer tailored support to families and parents whose children want to adopt a plant-based diet.

If your child or teenager has decided to try a plant-based diet, I can either work with both you and your child or just provide you with evidence-based nutritional facts and meal-planning support.

As a mum of a family of 6 (with mixed food preferences), I can also share delicious and easy family-friendly recipes and tried and tested strategies to keep everyone happy!

Health benefits of a plant-based diet

There is evidence on the health benefits of a plant-based diet, including:

  Reduced obesity risk

Did you know that Vegans have the lowest BMIs of the dietary groups? Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, type-2 diabetes and stroke.

Almost 30% of adults in the UK and 20% of children leaving primary school are medically classified as obese.

  Reduced type 2-diabetes risk

According to The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine “A plant-based diet is a powerful tool for preventing, managing, and even reversing type 2 diabetes”, in turn reducing your risk for heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, kidney disease, blindness, leg ulcers and peripheral vascular disease.

  Reduced Cancer risk

The World Health Organisation has announced that both red and processed meat are carcinogenic to humans, of processed meat, it states that no amount is safe to eat.

Eating a diet rich in wholegrains, fibre, and non-starchy vegetables is also proven to reduce your risk of certain cancers.

       BOOK AN APPOINTMENT

  Plant-based nutrition further reading

     Is a plant-based diet safe?

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says “appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes.”

See the full published research paper here

Is a plant-based diet better for the environment?

Researchers at the University of Oxford found that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could reduce your carbon footprint from food by up to 73%.

You don’t have to be fully plant-based to make a difference, small changes are still impactful.

https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aaq0216

Do you recommend supplements for plant-based diets?

As a Nutritional Therapist, I primarily focus on providing your body with the nutrients it needs through good quality, whole food.

However, if I feel supplements may support your health, I would recommend them.

I would discuss your individual requirements with you during our consultation.

What does the evidence say about the health benefits of a plant based diet?

In 2015 The World Health Organisation announced it had sufficient evidence from epidemiological studies to classify all processed meat as carcinogenic to humans and that no amount is safe.

https://www.who.int/news-room/questions-and-answers/item/cancer-carcinogenicity-of-the-consumption-of-red-meat-and-processed-meat

The World Cancer Research Fund says there is strong evidence that wholegrains and fibre decrease the risk of colorectal cancer; that non-starchy vegetables decrease the risk of cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, lung and breast; and that fruit reduces the risk of oesophagus and lung cancer. There is also some evidence that fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of stomach and bladder cancer, too.
